Distribution - a rare butterfly found mainly in southern England with relict populations in the Lake District and Yorkshire
When to look - late April to mid June with peak usually in May
Habitat - downland where Cowslips and Primroses grow.
​Places to look - try Rodborough Common in Gloucestershire and Ivinghoe Beacon in Buckinghamshire
Count the legs to establish the sex. The female has 6, the male only has 4.
